In addition, if the check engine light comes on in your car, a tune-up is likely necessary.

What Is Involved In A Tune-Up Service?

FAQs About Tune-ups

Yes, a tune up can make your vehicle more efficient. It should increase your fuel economy and ensure your vehicle starts correctly. Make sure to bring your vehicle into Ethan’s for regular tune ups.

Always follow your manufacturer’s recommended schedule for specific types of maintenance. For example, you should have your spark plugs replaced every 20,000-40,000 miles. Outside of scheduled maintenance tasks, you should consider bringing an older vehicle in for a tune up every 10,000-12,000 miles. If you have a vehicle from the last 30-40 years, though, you should only need a tune up every 100,000 or so, or if you notice the signs listed above.

Bringing your vehicle to Ethan’s on a regular schedule is a great way to avoid needing a tune up. But, sometimes things happen. Perhaps you had to miss an appointment, or your vehicle is not running as well as it should. In those cases, a tune up may be necessary. Ask for a tune up if you notice the following signs.

  • Less fuel efficiency
  • Stalling engine
  • Problems starting the vehicle
  • Black or bad-smelling exhaust
  • Check Engine light on

As mentioned in the last fact, what goes into a tune up has changed significantly over the last hundred years. The term has been around since the beginning of the automobile age. For fifty years or more it referred to the process of “tuning” the ignition and fueling systems. A mechanic has to make sure that the points ignition time and dwell were in sync. Tuning the carburetor was similarly important to the tune up process. In this era, vehicles would regularly go out of tune without warning and not on a set schedule.

Since the rise of computer-governed engines, the need for a traditional tune up has subsided. Today tune ups involve much of the maintenance that would fall under the heading of scheduled maintenance. However, that does not mean that the tune up is obsolete. Your mechanic can still help your engine run optimally by replace spark plugs, running engine diagnostics, etc. It is only the tasks that have fallen under the heading, tune up, that has changed.

Tune up is a term with a long history in the automobile industry. We discuss the history of the tune in the next fact. Here let’s discuss the modern tune.

At Ethan’s Honest Automotive, our tune ups involve ensures your engine, and the vehicle runs optimally. We do this by inspecting your engine, replacing spark plugs, and replacing the air and fuel filters. Many of the tasks that make up a tune up can also be considered part of scheduled maintenance. However, tune ups do not need to occur on a set schedule. Instead, if you notice that your vehicle is not running well or just want a quick check-in, bring it to Ethan’s for a tune up.
