1) What to do when I see a check engine light?

The check engine light is a very important part of your vehicle. It alerts you to a variety of system problems. These include letting you know there is a problem with your ignition, fuel injection system, emission control, catalytic converter, and more. A flashing check engine light indicates a more serious problem than a solid light.

If you notice your check engine light comes on, do not panic. This is especially important if you are driving the car. There is no need to get into an accident. Instead, contact Ethan’s Honest Automotive or your local auto mechanic. They will be able to run tests that indicate the exact problem affecting your vehicle.

2) How do I tell if I have an oil leak?

Oil leaks are always very annoying. Not only can they cause oil to spill out under your vehicle, but they can also cause a lot of problems to your engine. Whenever you have an oil leak, you should have it taken care of right away.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, you likely have an oil leak.

  • You see oil under your vehicle.
  • A smoking engine usually means an oil leak.
  • Burning oil has a very distinctive smell. Smelling burning oil is a dead giveaway that you have an oil leak.
  • If your vehicle has an oil light on the dashboard, it will come on if there is an oil leak.

3) What does preventative maintenance mean?

Preventative maintenance is sometimes abbreviated PM. This is where you bring your vehicle into a professional auto mechanic regularly to check for issues. Preventative maintenance can be anything from oil changes to tire rotations. Like medical check-ups, PM helps keep your car running smoothly and proactively ensures your vehicle stays in good repair.

At Ethan’s Honest Automotive, we provide a variety of preventative maintenance services, such as oil changes, tire rotation, coolant flushes, and more.

4) What is a timing belt, and do I need to change it?

Of all the car repair services provided by Ethan’s Honest Automotive, the timing belt is probably the least known. This is a shame because it plays a very important role in running your vehicle. The timing belt is an engine part. It ensures all of the parts of the engine, the water pump, oil pump, and injection pump move in sync.

Some modern vehicles use timing chains instead of belts. Check your owner’s manual to learn whether you have a timing belt or a timing chain. Timing belts need to be replaced quicker than timing chains. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your timing belt every 60,000-100,000 miles. Your owner’s manual will have this information as well.

5) What is the timeline for my routine vehicle maintenance?

Making sure your vehicle gets the correct maintenance on time is an important part of preventative maintenance. It is easy to remember to take your car to the shop when the check engine light comes on or when you have an oil leak. Getting your fluids replaced or tires rotated can be harder to remember.

Your owner’s manual will have the recommended maintenance schedule for your unique vehicle. You can also rely on Ethan’s Honest Automotive to keep you to the schedule that is right for your car.

A Few of Our Car Repair Services:

Oil Leaks

Spotting a leak under your car to find out it is oil, and not simply condensation can definitely spoil any day. Oil leaks are never fun and can become more costly the longer you let them go. We will take the time to check your entire engine to ensure we not only find the cause of the oil leak but repair it. Having a car repair professional assess these types of oil leaks to perform the car repair as quickly as possible is key to avoiding any problems down the road.

A/C Repair

The worst time to not have your A/C is usually when you need it the most. Our technicians will be able to recharge your A/C if a simple refrigerant addition is necessary. We will also thoroughly assess the issue if the A/C problem is more involved–such as a mechanical issue within the A/C cooling system–to determine the best plan of action.

Headlights

A headlight out can be not only lead to a ticket from the police but is also a safety issue. Let our car repair professionals quickly take care of the headlight issue. The moment you notice a headlight out, bring it in so one of our automotive repair technicians can replace the bulb or check for any other equipment errors that may have caused the outage. Putting off fixing a headlight can cost you more between servicing and any unwanted tickets, so bringing in your vehicle sooner rather than later is a best practice.

Check Engine Lights

Check engine lights always seem to come on when you least expect it. Even after checking your manual, you still may be stumped as to what is going on in your car that is causing the check engine light to come on. Our car repair technicians will be able to instantly connect your vehicle to our system and check out what may be the issue.

Sometimes, check engine lights come on as a fluke, and we will be able to shut the light off. Otherwise, we will be able to quickly fix the underlying problem so best to practice caution and bring your vehicle in as soon as the check engine light pops up to avoid costlier surprises down the road–or, even worse, wind up being broken down on the side of the road.

Air Bag lights

Airbags are essential to your safety, and any faulty airbags can pose a serious threat, both in an accident and while driving. Once your airbag light pops up, you need to bring your vehicle in right away to get assessed.

Ethan’s Honest Automotive Service and Repair’s technicians will be able to check any details regarding airbag recalls and quickly address the issue. We want our customers to be safe and having a non-working airbag puts you at risk for injury or fatalities. Bringing your vehicle in will ensure we will get the airbag working again and you can rest assured you will be safe on the road.

Power Windows

Remember hand-cranked windows? Yeah, we don’t want to think about them either. Power windows are always great–until they do not work anymore. Typically a quick replacement of the mechanism is all that is needed to get your power windows working again.

Our car repair technicians will be able to replace the mechanism and assess why it may have become faulty to ensure your power windows will continue to work so that you can get some fresh air in your car.

Power Locks

Power locks are key for the safety of your belongings in your car, as well as yourself and family. While Ethan’s Honest Automotive Service and Repair suggests you remove all valuables from your car when not in use, we also realize that power locks can also keep your belongings safe if that is not an option.

When your power locks stop working, you put your valuables and safety at risk so bringing your car in for Ethan’s Automotive technicians to assess all doors and wiring to find and fix the problem is your safest bet. We will ensure all doors adequately lock as quickly as possible.
